When Don Whitley Scientific needed to explain their catalyst monitoring system, they decided 3D product visualisation was the answer.
The patented system helps laboratories keep equipment running in the most effective state. They sell to scientists and lab managers in the microbiology and tissue culture industries. This is complex work using precise equipment, but the company wanted to make the instructions as simple as possible. They knew that a clear explainer would make the equipment more user-friendly and improve their customers’ results. What’s more, more use — and better use — of the workstation would no doubt boost catalyst sales, too.
But the budget was tight and time was short. Distant Future had the solution.

Very happy, thanks, Bill.
And very much appreciate the speed of delivery, even with Christmas in the way!

We had done work for Don Whitley Scientific before, so we already had CAD data for the workstation on file.
Animating from CAD allowed us very quickly to create a realistic rendering of the workstation. Then, by taking the viewer inside while it runs, we could demonstrate the performance of the catalyst itself. As a result of repurposing existing content that way, the 3D product visualisation took barely an hour to put together.
We needed to show the system’s ease of use, and that it can function unattended. That meant walking through the exact operating procedure on the control panel, with timings to suit the animation.
Showing content on the touchscreen simply didn’t need 3D, though. 2D visualisation was just fine for this part of the explainer video, so that’s what we did. We took the same vector files used by the workstation itself, and styled and timed them to match the animation.
Through smart use of past content, we created a new 60-second 2D/3D product visualisation, supporting customers and promoting sales, in little more than a day.
